Why Do I Refuse to Meet Strangers?

If you’ve been online or turned on the news this week you probably read about the Real Estate Agent, Beverly Carter, who went missing after a showing and then was found dead. As a Real Estate Agent this tragic event hits close to home and has affected the entire real estate community, but it has also validated my strict policy of not meeting strangers at properties.

Over the years I have had several prospective home buyers and tenants get very angry with me for refusing to jump in my car and meet them at a property, but that is not how I run my business. First and foremost I need to determine whether or not I am able to assist the prospective client with their real estate needs, if I can then I will verify their qualifications and identity. Once all of this takes place then and only then will I meet a person at a property.

Will I lose business because of my strict “not meeting strangers” policy? Absolutely, but arriving home safe and sound to my family is more important than a possible paycheck. I do not care if a stranger wants to view a $100,000 home or a $10M home my policy is the same for everyone.

My heart goes out to Beverly’s family and I pray real estate agents stop meeting strangers at properties, letting people know where you are going just isn’t good enough.
